The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCDT) has operated since 2001 as an independent, nonprofit organization committed to establishing humane, science-based standards for dog trainers and behavior professionals. Their certification helps ensure trainers meet the top industry benchmarks, leading to better outcomes for dogs and their owners.
Most certifications require at least 300 hours of dog training or consulting experience. Candidates must pass a rigorous, proctored examination covering five domains: instruction skills, learning theory, ethology, equipment, and animal husbandry. Certificants must pledge to follow a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. To maintain their credentials, trainers and behavior consultants must earn 36 CEUs every three years or retake the exam.
CATCH Canine Trainers Academy is built on the principle of "learning by doing," making the learning experience for its students more effective, memorable, and enjoyable. Their mento trainers come from across the United States and Canada and specialize in modern, science-based, positive-reinforcement dog training.
Their updated curriculum emphasizes the importance of science-based, positive-reinforcement training philosophies. Their goal is to foster a supportive learning environment that prioritizes the well-being of both trainers and animals.
Their curriculum includes in-person learning with one of 3,000 contracted mentor dog trainers across North America.
The Animal Positive Coalition is an organization dedicated to promoting force-free, science-based animal training and behavior modification. They focus on the "positive" aspects of animal care, advocating methods that prioritize animal welfare and emotional well-being while strengthening the bond between pets and their owners.
According to the Find a Professional directory, the organization serves as a hub for connecting pet owners with qualified professionals across various regions, predominantly in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. (including Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania).
